The Plateau now runs NIMS - "Novell Internet Mail System" which is running on a Novell Netware 5.1 server which also provides the Web & FTP services. All these services share usernames and passwords using Novell's eDirectory as used by BT and CNN. Currently, there is no Anti-Virus software, but there are plans to add this. Hardware-wise, the system is currently a dual processor machine (Pentium 266's) with 512M RAM and about 20GB is disk space. The system includes a tape unit which is used to backup the system about once a week. Once the main University backup system has been upgraded, I'll switch to that which will mean backups daily. The system is connected to the Internet though the UK Academic Network. This means that the speed of connection is at least 100Mb/s (The local LAN), 155Mb/s as far as Cardiff and then 622Mb/s from there to the rest of the World - of course your connection may well be slower than this! |
