Pennard Community First Responders

Minutes of the meeting held on 18th February 2008 at Pennard school

Present: Betty, Laurie, Bill, Frances, Allan, Jeremy, David, Wendy, Gary, Linda and Dem.

Apologies: Helen

1 Minutes of previous meeting
These were accepted as a true record.

2 Matters arising
The university has supplied funds to purchase a Cardiac Science practice AED and 'Brad' manikin, both of which could be borrowed on occasions for practicing scenarios in Pennard. As agreed in the 12 November meeting, once these are available we'll meet more regularly, say every 2 months, and alternate business meetings and scenario/practice sessions.

3 Financial position and upcoming purchases
Allan reported on our current financial position. We've received a number of donations over the past few months but have also purchased new equipment such as the Cardiac Science AED and the Nonin pulse oximeter. Notwithstanding these purchases the account is healthy and Jeremy or Allan will now purchase a new kit rucksack.

4 Inventory checklist
Dem reported that we are still missing many items on the checklist in our kit. He has repeatedly asked for the items to be supplied, but as yet they have not arrived. Until we are fully stocked there seems little point in checking the kit at the start of each shift (Dem will carry out a check every weekend) - though we are still expected to date and sign the sheet in the red bag and we must report any item used during a call.

5 New Incident Report
The new report is called the Patient Clinical Record (PCR). During a lively debate it was clear that a few members have misgivings about the new form, not least because we will be expected to complete it on site and give it the the departing paramedics. It was agreed that there may well be occasions in the future when, for whatever reason, the form cannot be completed before a paramedic crew leave the scene in a serious emergency and at such time we should complete the form as soon as possible and send it directly to Steve Roberts [ Steve writes: "It is important to complete the new PCR forms on scene as long as time and treatment allows. If the form cannot be completed on scene it must be sent to me ASAP. The treatment before the EMS response arrives on scene must be reported from now on to meet clinical audit."]

6 New volunteers
Dem has the names of 6 new volunteers and is in contact with Steve Roberts about setting up training sessions for them. This may be difficult for one or two of them who have Australian holidays booked in the next few months. However, all being well 4 or 5 of them could be trained within a month or so, resulting in them coming onto the rota by late summer (allowing for CRB and occupational health checks). Jeremy will supply Dem with contact details for Bryn Hazelden so that he can proceed with this. Action: Jeremy

7 Changes to rota
It was agreed to postpone this until a meeting in early April, by which time Betty, Jan and Emma should be available once more. Action: Fran to arrange meeting venue.

8 Any other business

  1. When we sign on a the start of each shift now we will be asked for the PINs of the responders on duty. These are available on the contact sheet Jeremy supplied to all members. Until Linda has received her occupational health clearance she will attend calls as an 'assistant' to Wendy (or whoever). She does not have a PIN currently.
  2. It was agreed to drop the blood pressure monitor from the kit now that we have the pulse oximeter.
  3. Jeremy will resend an email that gives information about using the pulse oximeter. Action: Jeremy
  4. Once the new rucksack-type bag is in use we will still circulate the green tube bag containing the second oxygen cylinder only.
  5. We have been advised to keep the kit in the house during the winter as the pulse oximeter may not work when it's cold.
