RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS - Asthma
 
Bronchial Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems. People with asthma have acute episodes of when the air passages in their lungs get narrower, and breathing becomes more difficult. Sometimes episodes of asthma are triggered by allergens, although infection, exercise, cold air and other factors are also important triggers.
 
Signs & Symptoms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • A bluish colouration of the skin, lips or nails (Cyanosis)
  • Difficulty breathing except in an upright position (Orthopnea)
  • Coughing
Treatment
  • Keep calm and reassure the casualty
  • Let the patient adopt the position most comfortable - usually sitting down
  • Ask him to breath slowly and deeply
  • Let the patient use his inhaler (if he has one)
  • Give oxygen therapy (24-28% mask @ 4 litres per minute)
  • Constantly monitor the situation: record breathing and pulse every 10 minutes
  • NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THIS CONDITION - IT CAN KILL!
