RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS - Bronchitis |

| Bronchitis is an
inflammation of the
bronchi (lung airways), resulting in a persistent cough
that produces consideration quantities of sputum (phlegm). Bronchitis is
more common in smokers and in areas with high atmospheric pollution. |

Signs & Symptoms
|

Rapid breathing rate (Tachypnoea)
-
Difficulty in breathing (Dyspnoea)
- Productive cough
-
A bluish colouration of the skin, lips or nails (Cyanosis)
- Airways may be blocked
|
|
Treatment |
- Keep calm and reassure the casualty
- Let the patient adopt the position most comfortable
- usually sitting down
- Give oxygen therapy ( @ 4 litres per
minute - but be aware of
hypoxic drive)
- Encourage coughing
- Constantly monitor the situation
- Be prepared to ventilate or carry out CPR
